Treatments for Lines & Wrinkles-Botox

Botox

Botox is used to reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles around the eyes and brow by directly injecting it into the area. It can also be used to treat prominent bands in the neck. Botox is also used for excessive sweating.

What is Botulinum Toxin?
Botulinum Toxin is a naturally occurring protein derived from the Bacterium Clostridium Botulinum. The popular brand names used in the UK are BOTOX, DYSPORT VISTABEL and AZZALURE. When used cosmetically, it can smooth out dynamic lines, restoring a more youthful, less stressed expression to your face.

Is Botox safe?
Botox injections have been used safely and effectively by trained medical practitioners for over 20 years. Tens of thousands of patients receive Botox treatment every year making it the number one cosmetic procedure in the UK. Botox is lisenced to treat many medical conditions, and can be safely given to children as young as 2.

How does Botox work?
Whenever you laugh, frown, concentrate or squint your facial muscles contract and your skin creases. As you get older your skin loses its elasticity and those creases deepen into lines that become permanently etched on your face. Frown lines between your eyes can become particularly noticeable at a relatively young age, making you look angry, worried or stressed even when you’re not.

By injecting tiny amounts of Botox very precisely into specific facial muscles, the nerve impulses responsible for contraction of these muscles are blocked. This causes a temporary weakness or paralysis of that muscle resulting in the overlying skin becoming smooth and unwrinkled.

What are the benefits?
By relaxing the muscles that cause frown lines, forehead lines and crows feet:

• The skin appears dramatically smoother
• Facial lines disappear or diminish dramatically in just a few days
• The creation of more wrinkles is prevented
• Normal activities can be resumed immediately
• It only takes a few days for the injections to begin to take effect and 14 days for full effect

Preparing for the treatment
During your consultation with the Doctor a full medical history will be taken to assess your suitability, and the benefits and potential side effects will be discussed in full.

What is the treatment like?
Tiny micro-needles are used so discomfort is minimal. No sedation or local anaesthetic is required and treatment takes around 10 minutes.

After the treatment
You can resume normal activities, drive yourself home or return to work immediately after the treatment. Exercise should be avoided for 4 hours after the treatment, and the area should not be touched in this time. You should also avoid laying down. It is safe to fly after the treatment although we generally recommend that you wait 24 hours. You are advised to attend for a review 2-3 weeks after your first treatment.

What are the limitations of Botox?
Botox is best at treating dynamic facial lines i.e. those caused by facial muscular activity. This treatment does not improve wrinkles due to aging and sun-damage which are unrelated to facial muscle activity. The effects of the injections will generally last around 3 - 4 months. Facial muscles that are larger (such as in men) or which are used by facially ‘expressive’ clients may require more frequent treatments.

Who is suitable for Botox treatment?
Starting in our late twenties, facial lines and wrinkles begin to appear that affect not just your appearance, but also your self-esteem and even your choice of career. By smoothing out those lines Botox can help you restore a more youthful, less stressed expression to your face. Many people can benefit from Botox - not just celebrities, and it can work as well for men as it does for women. In fact many men are already experiencing the benefits of a younger, more relaxed looking appearance that Botox can provide.

Who is not suitable for treatment?
Anyone who is pregnant, breast feeding or suffering from severe neuromuscular disorders, Bell’s palsy or blood coagulation disorders, are not suitable for treatment.

Will it interact with any medication I am taking?
Drug interactions can occur when Botox is used concomitantly with other medications. You must ensure that your doctor is aware of any medications you are taking, especially aminoglycoside antibiotics (gentamicin, neomycin), aspirin, anti-inflammatories, Gingko Biloba and St John’s Wort.

Are there any side effects?
Botox has been used for over 20 years to treat facial wrinkles and its safety and efficacy has been shown in many clinical trials. In addition there have been no long term side effects reported from the use of Botox.

However, whilst uncommon, temporary adverse effects may arise from the treatment. Occasionally a small bruise may occur at the injection site – this can be covered with make-up. In very rare circumstances patients may experience heaviness or descent of the eyebrow or eyelid which may last a few weeks. Prior to your treatment the doctor will assess your risk of this event and therefore adjust you treatment accordingly.

What is the treatment like?

The filler is injected with a very fine needle under the skin surface. An anaesthetic cream will be applied to the area for approximately 20 - 30 minutes prior to the treatment. Any discomfort is therefore minimal. For lip treatments, an anaesthetic nerve block is used which is similar to a dental injection. Treatments then take about 20 - 30 minutes.

After the treatment

The results with dermal fillers are instant. Afterwards the treated area may be slightly red and/or slightly swollen, however you can resume normal activities, drive yourself home or return to work immediately after the treatment.

How long will the effects last?

This depends on the product used and the structure of your skin. Other factors such as lifestyle, age and the degree of perfection demanded by the individual will also influence the life of the filler. Hyaluronic acid products such as Restylane and Perlane typically last 6-12 months, Additional touch up treatments can be performed at any time after the initial treatment.

Who is not suitable for treatment?

Dermal fillers have not been tested in pregnant or nursing women, and are therefore not advised. If you have a history of cold sores in the area to be treated, it is advisable that you take anti-herpes medicine (which we will prescribe) before and after the treatment to help reduce the likelihood of an outbreak of cold sores.

Are there any side effects?

Although uncommon, possible adverse effects may include:

  • Injection-related reactions. These reactions may include swelling, redness, discomfort, itching and bruising at the injection site immediately after the treatment. Such reactions are typically mild and resolve within a few hours.
  • Allergic reaction. The risk of an allergic reaction is extremely rare and they are usually self-limiting. Allergic reactions can however be treated with oral or injectable corticosteroids or the product removed using an injectable enzyme (hyaluronidase).
  • Infection. As with all injections, this procedure carries a risk of infection. The syringe is sterile and standard precautions associated with injectable materials are always taken.

Treatment

The filler is injected directly into the area where enhancement is required. Emla cream (a local anesthetic cream) can be applied or a local anesthetic injection can be given prior to the treatment to make the procedure more comfortable.

Possible Complications

THE Face can be marked with punctures from the fine needles used. Lighter skinned people and people with red hair tend to bruise more easily, swelling can occur in the area treated and there will be redness in the area. A pimple may develop if make up is applied immediately, cold sores can also occur if you are susceptible to them.

How Long?

Most temporary fillers last between 6 months to 1 year depending upon which filler is used. Advice will be given at consultation.-

After Treatment

Most people can return to daily life after a treatment with filler. There is usually some swelling, redness, pain, itching and tenderness which settles spontaneously. The effects of the injection need to settle so it is best to have a few quiet days after treatment, with minimized movement of the treated area. Temporary fillers last about 6-12 months and if desired, follow-up treatment can be performed.

Restylane - One Syringe or Two Syringes

Teosyal Deep Lines and Ultra Deep

Teosyal® is a new range of non-animal 100% hyaluronic acid based wrinkle filling products. These products are highly biocompatible and are slowly absorbed. Teosyal can be injected into the entire face, neckline, neck and hands. No pre-testing is required.

Naturally present in the skin, hyaluronic acid preserves moisturising levels in the skin and boosts tone. The quantity of hyaluronic acid in the skin (dermis) decreases with age. As a result the skin dries out and becomes fragile with the appearance of wrinkles. The tissues progressively sag and the face becomes hollow.

Injected into the dermis Teosyal effectively alleviates this hyaluronic acid deficiency thanks to its high hyaluronic acid concentration. Teosyal revitalises and rehydrates the skin, fills in wrinkles and fine lines, adds volume and definition to lips and remodels and softens facial contours.

Treated Areas

Teosyal Deep Lines: Very deep wrinkles, furrows, folds
Teosyal Ultra Deep: Facial volumes, very deep wrinkles in thick skin.
